We sat down and spoke to our AWM Project Manager, Bodo Hinz, as we reflected on the complexity, challenges, and incredible outcome of one of our biggest and best projects to date, the Australian War Memorial Expansion.
Preserving an Icon. Delivering Precision.
The reroofing of the Australian War Memorial presented a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the nation’s most significant heritage landmarks. Our team was engaged to deliver a high-performance roofing solution incorporating copper, selected for its durability, longevity, and ability to complement the building’s historic character.

Careful Planning for a Sensitive Environment
From project inception, a highly structured planning approach was critical. Design development and planning commenced more than six months in advance, including key design stages and the production of detailed samples to ensure alignment with heritage requirements.
Operating within a live, publicly accessible environment required detailed staging, controlled site access, and stringent safety protocols. Close coordination with stakeholders ensured seamless integration with ongoing operations, while heritage constraints guided the selection and installation of copper roofing elements to maintain architectural authenticity.

The extensive underlay process had to be completed prior to installation of the copper roof sheets.
Overcoming Complex Challenges
Working around live artifacts within the museum environment introduced significant complexity. Limited access and the requirement to maintain minimal dust levels demanded meticulous planning and controlled execution to protect the integrity of the space.
Additional challenges included restricted access zones, working at height, and maintaining uninterrupted site operations. The installation of copper roofing systems required specialised handling, precise detailing, and allowances for thermal movement. Unforeseen conditions within the existing roof structure were addressed through adaptive problem-solving and responsive decision-making, ensuring continuity of the project programme.

The bullnoses consisted of many prefabricated and preassembled modules, which greatly reduced installation times and risk on site.
Delivering Quality That Lasts
Execution combined skilled workmanship with disciplined project controls to achieve an exceptional standard of installation. Quality assurance was maintained on a daily basis, supported by the effective management of multiple teams operating across different sections of the site.
The copper roofing system was installed with careful attention to substrate preparation, jointing, and weatherproofing, ensuring long-term performance and resilience. Over time, the copper will naturally develop a protective patina, enhancing durability while preserving the building’s iconic appearance.

A Result Worth Remembering
This project highlights our capability to deliver technically complex roofing solutions within sensitive, high-profile environments. More than a construction outcome, it represents a meaningful contribution to Australian history.
Our performance has earned recognition from Lend Lease, reflecting our commitment to quality, professional conduct, and strict adherence to WHS practices.
